Home into the unknown
With the Scrub back to the roots of freeride
Over 6,000 kilometres by plane – from Europe to British Columbia. A journey from the homeland back home. Less to the place where you regularly sleep, eat, have family and friends. Rather, to where one's own athletic identity is rooted.
The six ROSE athletes Tobey Miley, Bernd Winkler, Johanna Nußbaumer, Peter Henke, Jarno Ahnert and Patricia Druwen travelled to Canada together to be where some of mountain biking’s greatest legends were born. The Scrub was the bike of choice for big jumps, tables and berms in the Whistler Bike Park and dusty, steep freeride lines in the gravel pits of Kamloops.
Stopover: Slopestyle world elite on the big stage
Showdown at the SilverStar Bikepark. One of the most important contests of the year awaits Johanna, Patricia and Tobey. For Johanna and Tobey, it's the chance to win one of the popular wildcards for the final Crankworx event, which takes place a few days later in Whistler. Both put in extremely strong runs and book their ticket for the big slopestyle stage.
Tobey starts in Whistler and finishes an outstanding fourth among the absolute world elite. This cements his claim to be a regular part of the Crankworx Tour with the Bruce from 2026.
British Columbia – One of a kind
British Columbia is more than just a destination – it's a myth. Here, between the Pacific Ocean and the snow-covered Coast Mountains, freeride was born. Names like Wade Simmons, Richie Schley and Brett Tippie shaped an entire generation from Vancouver in the 1990s.
"Canada was my highlight of the summer. The spots we rode there were truly awesome." – Bernd Winkler
"I will always remember this trip. It was so impressive to cycle in these legendary places in Canada. I thought less and did more. This has made me more self-confident." – Johanna Nußbaumer
Boundaries were pushed together. Each rider contributed their own perspective and skillset. They pushed each other, found new lines and grew closer together day by day.
"The mix of experienced bikers and young guns was just perfect. We all learnt a lot from each other and took away a lot of good experiences from the trip." – Peter Henke
The ROSE athletes were accompanied by film maker Toni Schwanke and photographer Hannes Mautner.
"It was an unforgettable trip. The atmosphere in the team was insane and shooting on site was a dream come true. I am infinitely grateful for the experience." – Jarno Ahnert
