How to adjust the SRAM AXS on a gravel bike

If the gears ever get stuck, SRAM AXS electronic shifting systems can be adjusted with minimal effort. We'll show you, step by step, how to get your rear derailleur working again.

Note

This tutorial describes how to set up SRAM XPLR (eTap) AXS Gravel 12- or 13-speed systems. The images may show a different rear derailleur model and are for illustrative purposes only. For more details, please refer to the manufacturer's manual. For Red/Force/Rival XPLR AXS rear derailleurs with full-mount attachment, only step 4 applies. For more details, see the manual.

The rear derailleur

  • H-screw: Adjustment of outer end stop (not available on Red/Force/Rival XPLR AXS)
  • L-screw: Adjustment of inner end stop (not available on Red/Force/Rival XPLR AXS)
  • B-screw: Adjustment of chain wrap (not available on Red/Force/Rival XPLR AXS)

Step 1: Initial setup

  • Shift to the second-largest sprocket.
  • Look at the rear derailleur from behind and check whether the upper pulley wheel (rear derailleur) is parallel to the second-largest sprocket.
  • Otherwise, adjust the position by pressing the inner button on the left or right shifter while simultaneously pressing the shifter. This causes the rear derailleur to move 0.25 mm to the left (left shifter) or to the right (right shifter).

Step 2: Adjusting the chain wrap

  • Stay on the second-largest sprocket.
  • Look at the gap between the upper pulley wheel and the largest sprocket from the rear (disc brake side), and measure it with a ruler (starting from the outer edges of the large teeth). By turning the B screw in or out, you can increase or decrease the gap.
  • The appropriate gap depends on the largest sprocket on your cassette: 36 teeth = 11 mm, 44 teeth = 7 mm

Note: SRAM recommends using a Chaingap Tool compatible with your rear derailleur to adjust the chain wrap. The procedure is described in the respective manual (see above).

Step 3: Adjusting the end stops

  • Shift to the largest sprocket.
  • Now turn the L-screw (clockwise) until the front end lightly touches the stop (on the opposite side).
  • Shift to the smallest sprocket.
  • Now turn the H-screw (clockwise) until the front end lightly touches the stop (on the opposite side).

Step 4: Checking and readjusting

  • Shift through all the gears one by one using the small and large chainrings.
  • If the chain doesn't run smoothly and quietly in a particular gear, you can adjust the rear derailleur sideways in 0.25 mm increments (see step 1).

Your rear derailleur should now shift smoothly and run silently.
If it cannot be adjusted in this way, there may be various reasons such as a bent derailleur hanger. In such cases, the service workshop in your Rose store will be happy to help you.
